Tanzanite is the birthstone for the month of December. So all the December babies can now have another gemstone added to their birth month along with Turquoise and Blue Topaz. The gemstone was discovered in the year 1967 and was awarded with title as the “Gemstone of the 20th century”. It got its recognition as the gemstone for the last month of the year in 2002 October by American Gem Trade Association.

What made Tanzanite the gemstone for the month of December?
The main reason for this modern gemstone to become a birthstone for the December is its versatile nature. Tanzanite radiates spectrum of colors between azure and amethyst. This signifies the cooling effect and the warmth imbibed within it. The richness of the color corresponds to the glowering wintery sky.

What makes the color?
The different hues of colors liberated by the December stone are due to the different lighting condition. Natural daylight tends to bring out the blue tones in tanzanite, while incandescent light brings out the violet. But in reality the rich, deep color of the gemstone is hardly a pure blue.
